Gerag's Cave Burial Site

caveburial.gif This burial site is located in Gerag's Cave, located west of the South Pass entrance. The cave is named for the drake Gerag who once lived here, although the cave is now home to dangerous green slime monsters.

The person buried here seems to be some sort of non-Orga humanoid, but it's difficult to tell more without somehow opening the grave. There are no identifying marks or writing on the outside of the grave, and there are no artifacts elsewhere in the cave to provide clues.

I suspect that Dwarves were responsible for this burial site. No other culture I'm aware of buries their dead by sealing them behind a wall underground. There are other cultures who favor underground burial, but they either bury their dead in graves dug near the surface (such as the Old Cemetery) or places them in open areas (such as the Ossuary under the Healer's Temple).

It is possible that Gerag might have buried this person, although that seems unlikely--drakes' bodies are not well suited to manipulating rocks, and if Gerag had done it the rocks protecting the burial site would probably not be so secure.

laiyscave.gif For many years Gerag's Cave was unreachable by exiles, but recently the rocks have shifted making it possible for us to enter. The sketches to the left both show the cave entrance--the top sketch is how it looked when I first saw it in 546, and the sketch on the bottom is how it appears today.
