As
Duncan and
Iain have announced there is a new
university society being created called geekSoc. At the first meeting on Tuesday I proposed the idea that as well as the required committee of President, Vice Pres, Treasurer and Secretary we should also have someone in charge of events/industrial relations. The idea was enthusiastically received, only problem for me now is that I've ended up with the job.
Looks like I'm going to have to improve my social and organisational skills to get some contacts and arrange industrial visits or presentations. I know Duncan has links with Motorola and I know someone who works at Pilkington Electronics, both of which would be of interest to me with my course in Computer and Electronic Systems but most of the society are only (and thats not being disparaging, well maybe :) ) Computer Science or Software Engineering and therefore may not be interested in the electronics side.
Talking of social skills one thing I noticed was that the intial discussion about a geekSoc society on the department newsgroup had quite a few contributions from lots of different people but when we got together in a face-to-face situation there wasn't much talking going on for the first 40min or so. I suppose we are geekSoc what should I expect :) I'm sure we'll be better next time, now that we know each other.
