I thought the "badly designed" hitch broke before you ever left Lewiston and this was the "well designed" hitch that carried you thru the Death Valley trip. The hitch was subject to some stress getting into and out of Titus Canyon, but as mountain biking goes, fairly mild stress. A break on both hitches is a strong arguement for panniers!
