Day two: Carey to Arco with a ride through Craters of the Moon.
Day 2 Gallery
Sandy Green is the complete host following the course attending the rest stops and acting as entertainment coordinator.
She encouraged us to visit Craters of the moon—it seemed as a way to delay our arrival at camp on a 43 mile day. The logistics of moving 16 porta-potties, preparing water stops, moving luggage for 165 riders, purchasing and preparing food for everyone would be a minor study in small business. Her plan worked on us.
Though Craters is a blasted, barren, landscape of tortured, twisted pyroclastic flows only a geologist could love,
we enjoyed the 11 miles of park roads. A 10% grade drew rave reviews and nearly sent us back for a second run.
Leaving the park we found the only food stop for the day and chowed down. While the morning had presented the first appreciable climbing of the trip, the last 20 miles to Arco were mostly downhill with tailwinds.
At dinner Sandy encouraged us to walk past the youth baseball game to the high school to attend a talent show. She suggested that the OBR had made a contribution to the show and so we would not have to pay to get in. Without really knowing what we were getting into, many of us chose to sit in bleachers and take our chances. What else did we have to do anyway? Turns out the show was initiated by Sandy and included small children and adults from the community. We all had a good time. These were pretty nice folks to put together a show just for us.
