    Touchet Valley 049

    Still waters run deep.

A person’s calm exterior often conceals great depths of character, just as the deepest streams can have the smoothest surfaces. (Dictionary of Cultural Literatcy)

    Some notes from the Weekend

    This from Doug Goodenough

    Hi Corrie,

Did you go on the CDA ride? If so how was it? I had social engagements this weekend so couldn't make it.

I went trail riding up asotin creek on Friday and had a slight mishap....

Hit a rock hidden in the grass and flew over the bars and landed on my face. All in all I was pretty lucky.

Saturday I did an extended lewiston loop and sunday rode up to colton.

Looking forward to the 3 summits ride next weekend.

    Have a good one, Doug

    And this from John McInturff

Corrie, Thanks again to you and the Twin River Cyclists for helping to make a great weekend ride.

Please tell Linda, we were really just kidding about Rylee buying more rocks. Linda looked like she was starting to get concerned for Rylee's mental state, which is actually as steady a rock. I didn't take as many pictures as I hoped to, and certainly thought I'd spend a little more time riding with y'all. I thought for sure you'd catch up to us on the hill, what with all the fooling around we do.

I've attached a few pictures for your blog, if you want them. The oddly framed picture of Rylee is oddly framed because the focus of the picture is not actually Rylee, but the rock monument marking the location (between mile post 30 and 31) of Rylee's road rash incident from a few weeks ago. Apparently the wind from the storm was enough to blow the top stone off the marker.

I had to take this picture on-the-fly, since Rylee didn't feel much like stopping to honor the spot this time through, even though some of her favorite skin is buried there.

The young moose in the picture was probably about a teenager by our standards. Still kind of fuzzy and awkward.

Hope you enjoy the pictures, John

    Photos from Mike and Nicky

Who'd have expected an afternoon concert? All we wanted was ice cream. Some of us had ridden on to Wallace for ice cream. I was a little peeved since the music interrupted any conversation, but still it's surprises like these that make cycling fun. We had no nasty surprises other than my shifting. Carla did manage to fall off her bike and presented a nasty swollen wrist but by dinner it looked better.

I heard some complaints at Plummer on Sunday about the heat but really it had been cool and comfortable both days. Parking lots when you aren't moving are always uncomfortable.

Scott stopped to say hi as he passed me at a rest stop. "Lance had to stop and throw rocks in the river," he reported. It was the kind of weekend that makes baby boomers go kind of funny.

So here is the honor roll: See if I can get everybody. Corrie, Linda, Mike, Nicky, Scott, Debbie, Jim and Wanda, Lance and Jan, Sean, Shelly, John McInturff and Rylee, Helen, John and Carla. 17. I think that's all.

    Doug does the Wallowa's

Doug's Flickr front page has some pics from his ride to Halfway, Or.

While we were fighting wind on the Palouse last Sunday, Doug thought he had a better idea. He planned to ride from Joseph to Halfway, Or, stay over night and ride back the next day. Here's his story.

    Doug's says . . .

Read your write-ups of the weekend rides......sounds like a good time. Were the winds worse than what we had?

My Joseph to halfway ride was "interesting" The ride out wore me down big time......I put in 93 miles but I felt it so much more than the century we did....I was completely shot. When I finally made it to the motel I just laid on the floor for 30 mins or so trying to recover. I did have a GREAT meal later at a lil gourmet restaurant. Very surprising to find such a place in this tiny Oregon town. The next morning my front tire was flat. This was my 2nd or 3rd puncture on this tube so I decided to put in a new tube instead of patching the old one. So, I thought no problem and proceeded to change the tubes......then I put the pump on and started to inflate the tube.....funny I noticed that the tube was not inflating!!! I put my ear down close to the pump and could hear a leak coming from the pump where it mated with the tube. I adjusted the connection a few times and still no go. I tried several more times to get the pump to seal without success. At this point I figured my rubber part in the pump that forms the seal must be abraded to the point that it would not seal. So I hit the two gas stations and hardware store in town to see if anyone had a pump or fitting that would connect to the tube fittings.........Nothing......uhoh! Then I thought hey maybe if I wrap the tube stem with teflon tape that might help it make a seal.....so I mess with that for 30 mins or so and still nothing. Finally I am forced to admit defeat and called my wife to have her come get me.........she showed up 4 hrs later and we drove home......I was pretty bummed and she was not thrilled having to drive all that way. I thought I was prepared tool wise but I never thought my pump would fail.

    Oh well live and learn....hehe.

I took the mtn bike out last night and headed up George creek ( the dirt road that takes off to the left at the base of cloverdale grade)......that is one steep SOB let me tell you.....I did the math from my GPS numbers and the avg grade is 10.5 % with several sections around 13%+....... I managed to make it to the top without stopping though.....whew!
