Overview
Fishing is a fun way to pass the time since one can catch from a variety of thirteen different kinds of fish. Unfortunately, fish are not used for any alchemy potion, baked goods, or anything else at this time and they can be sold for only a small amount. Only Flingerlings can be thrown and they are comparatively rare so you can't expect to be a fish flingling fiend, at least not without time invested.
To start your fishing career head to the plain hut by the docks and purchase a fishing pole for 100c from Pantofer. Pesca Fishmonger will purchase your fish from you for 1c each except for Flingerlings which she'll purchase for 5c each. Vissen Fishmonger will sell you a Fishing Cooler for 25c which will hold up to 15 fishes and is indispensable for avid fishermen. Nell Grappen will sell you an anchor if you give her 3 pieces of iron metal and 500c. Getting an anchor is not necessary since there are plenty of places to fish on land. However, if you want to fish on the ocean it is necessary to invest in an anchor since any movement will cause you to reel in your line.
Once you have a fishing pole you can now fish anywhere there's water. Simply equip it in your right hand, say /use, and you will cast the line into the water indicated by a floating wooden bobber. When a fish bites your hook the bobber will sink and you'll hear a bloop which means you need to say /use again to pull in the fish. If you're too late doing this the fish will remove itself from the hook and swim away so you have to be quick. Thanks to a tip from Sutai I've found that the farther you are from the water the more likely the fish will land close to where you are standing which makes it easier to pick them up.
When you catch a fish it flops on the ground so you have to chase it before it manages to get back into the water.
Even though all of the fish look alike from afar, their apperance changes drastically when you look at them closer. The fish are very cute!

You can fish anywhere there's water but I've found that as a Mystic some places are better than others because the last thing I want as I'm fishing is to have to either run from or kill beasts. The dock is a good spot along with the Lilly Pond and the Underground right below the entrance through the Brewery. I've taken some statistics from my time fishing in the Lilly Pond and the Underground so you'll know how much of each fish you can expect to get.
Aside from fish there are some other odds and ends you can also pull up from the murky depths of water. Occasionally you can scare up a monster which will attack you including Winged Snakes and Green Meshras but nothing tougher as of yet. I've also pulled up an old shoe which can't be worn but merely takes up a slot in the backpack so I've thrown them away. I've pulled up one pair of shoes that can be worn but since they were dark brown I didn't find any use for them. Perhaps other colors and items can be pulled up but I haven't as of yet.
There's also a chance to break the fishing pole or being lucky and it just bending nearly in two with the fish slipping away before it breaks. I've only had one break so far but I have heard of others breaking several in a row and only after a few fishing attempts so I'm not sure whether I've just been lucky or there's some other factor in deciding whether the fishing pole breaks or not. I've also had bad casts where the line gets tangled in my clothes but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the fishing pole.
Fishing won't make you instantly rich but I find it fun and relaxing and it's a good way to pass the time while my kudzu is growing and is a reliable source of income.
