Just a few additions to Mark's explanation (thanks, Mark!).

Well said! ;-)

Its API allows it, but there's only the browser interface, at the moment, to manage events. However, there's a (customer's) site where the event calendar is used to generate tagged XPress files, and in this case, the output is not a web page at all.

It's also a good way to set different access levels. For example, lets say your site has lots of "static" pages that are publicly accessible, and that are managed by a team of editors. You can use a conversation whose only bound pages are public, so only your editors will see the discussion group. They'll use it to manage the static pages, and to discuss between them. They can work on several versions of a page, and bind it (that is make it public) only when it's finished. You can also have a weblog, in this conversation, to display publicly some selected messages from the DG. Now if you wanted your site to have also one or several public DGs, you'd just add new (publicly accessible) conversations to this zone.
