Free-Conversant

Weblogs, Web Sites, and Lots More

What is Conversant?

Conversant is designed to help groups of all sizes work together by making it easy for them to share ideas, questions, files, and knowledge. It also has lots of features that make it very easy for a small group - or an individual - to publish dynamic web sites.

Conversant is software for your Internet (or Intranet) server. Standard features include tools for managing news pages and journals (weblogs), feature-rich event calendars, online discussion forums (with file enclosure capabilities), tools for publishing entire web sites, email and mailing-list integration, and many other services that are great for all kinds of business, project, and personal web sites and communication-centers.

Free-Conversant is Macrobyte's web site hosting service, based on Conversant. We offer everything from free sites, to inexpensive domain hosting, to dedicated Conversant (and traditional) servers.

What people are saying about Conversant...

This is the part I love about your software/company -- every time I ask a question, you reply with options, options and more options.
-- Brian Carnell

I'm beginning to use it and conversant is great. Congratulations Seth and Macrobyters.
-- David Harrod

The more I dig the more I'm impressed at just how well thought out Conversant is. This is really powerful stuff.
-- Duncan Smeed

Wow, This is what I called Super Charged Manila. Thanks for showing what is possible and great team work.
-- Paul Chow

Thanks, as always, for such a rapid response from the Macrobyte 'team'. You guys are great!
-- Duncan Smeed

I have fallen in love with your stylesheet tool. My intentions, however, are strictly honorable. I just did some things with h1, h2, and h3 even though I *still* don't really know how to code a stylesheet. Fantastic.
-- Mark Morgan

Conversant's Weblog II is incredible -- it's not done yet, but is already one of the most powerful online journaling tools around.
-- Greg Pierce

Power and flexibility! Five years, and I still can't get enough of this system.
-- Seth Dillingham

New Feature: Resources

Another great new feature is now available in all Conversant sites! Resources are items which appear frequently throughout your site. They could be images, links, or even common bits of text (including simple macros).

If you use an image frequently in your site, and don't like having to type out the full <IMG> tag every time you use it, make it into a resource. Then you only need to type its name to display it in a message or a template. For example, |smileyIdea| produces smiley with lightbulb.

Our Second Domain Hosting Special

We're running another special on our Basic Domain Hosting package, and just like the last one, this special will fade out over the course of the week.

If you sign up before 9:00 PM on Monday, May 29, your monthly fee for the first year will be just $20 per month (normally $35), and the signup fee will be just $45 (normally $75). That's a savings of $210 in the first year, and $45 in the first month.

On Tuesday, the price will be a little bit higher, and so on throughout the week. By Saturday, the savings will be over $60. Wouldn't you rather save $210?

Taundra

A new Conversant site went online last night. Taundra is a world with two suns and three moons, full of magic and mystery.

If you like to read stories in the science fiction / fantasy genre, then you're going to love Taundra.

The Taundran stories originally appeared on Voices of Unreason, which is a place for writers. Taundra did well on that site, and deserved to move to its own home, and we're pleased that Aradia (the author) chose to continue with Conversant hosting.

Super Speed and Better Macros

Yesterday Macrobyte released a new version of Conversant which improved the speed of page serving dramatically. Check back here later for the official numbers, but we believe it was at least a 250% improvement.

The upgrade also improved existing features, the most important of which is recursive macro evaluation. That's a fancy way of saying that if the text returned by a simple macro contains another simple macro, that secondary macro will be evaluated.

As always, read about and discuss these new features on the Support Site.

Summaries for Weblog Items

Yesterday's upgrade also included an improvement to Conversant's weblogs: it is now possible to use a message summary (a teaser), in place of the actual message that's been posted to the weblog. This summary can contain macros, so the possible uses are almost limitless (and this is a feature that has been requested many times).
