FAQ: What is a Tip? What is a FAQ? What is a How-To? What is a Guide?

By Mark Morgan

Here's a quick-and-dirty breakdown of the organization of Becoming Conversant:

  • Tip: a very brief (one short paragraph or so) Very Cool Idea; tips assume you understand some basic terms;
  • FAQ: a question that needs an answer; all FAQs have a question as their title; FAQs explain just enough to answer the question in a couple of paragraphs;
  • How-To: a step by step series of instructions on how to do something; can mean either some Very Cool Thing someone has figured out how to do, or something that isn't adequately doecumented in Conversant yet; How-Tos are intended to give you all the details you need to accomplish some task;
  • Guides: an overview of some topic of interest, defining terms where necessary and pointing to other documents along the way; or, you can think of it as a collection of information about some general topic.
