I'm no hacker by any means, I just know what works for me. Hopefully these HOWTOs will help you improve your font rendering on SuSE. While it is aimed specifically at SuSE 8.2, some of the information will apply to any earlier releases, as well as some other Linux distros.

Compiling Freetype2 on SuSE 8.x: How to restore the byte-code hinting option.

Font Fight: How to get non-Xft fonts to display in KDE, and how to see TTFs in non-QT applications.

DPI (Dots Per Inch) -- 100pdi versus 75dpi: You may not be getting the best display for your modern video card and monitor.

Diagnosing Font Problems: Some things I've learned to check when tracing font display issues.

Gtk2/Gnome2 Outside of Gnome2: How to get the fonts and color scheme you want for Gtk2 applications when you aren't running Gnome2.

Mozilla Matters: How to understand Mozilla's display characteristics, and get the most from it.
