WeblogView Pagw

A WeblogView page is a lot like a normal Weblog page.

The only significant difference is that it doesn't have its own archive of messages -- it uses the archive of messages of another existing Weblog page.

You set up a WeblogView page in the Conversant Admin interface almost exactly as you set up a Weblog page.

Properties WeblogView pages have that Weblog pages do not:

  • Weblog to View: Choose the Weblog page whose message archive you want the WeblogView page to use.

Properties WeblogView pages have that Weblog pages do not:

  • Owner - WeblogView pages use the Owner property of the Weblog page you select as the "Weblog to View". If you are the owner of the corresponding Weblog page, you will be able to edit the corresponding Weblog message archive from the WeblogView page.
  • Weblog's Timezone - WeblogView pages use the Timezone property of the Weblog page you select as the "Weblog to View".

Other properties:

All other properties of the Weblog page type are available to each WeblogView page you create. That means, for example, each WeblogView page will be use a different template, and have customized Day and Item templates for displaying the Weblog's message archive.

Macros:

All the Weblog-specific macros apply equally to WeblogView pages.

Archives:

Browsing the archives of a Weblog from a WeblogView page's calendar works exactly the same way as it does with Weblog pages.

Usage Ideas:

Using a WeblogView page, you could create a variety of different versions of your weblog for different visitors. Some examples:

  • A fancy Dynamic HTML version compatible with version 5+ browsers
  • A basic HTML version compatible with older browsers, and text browsers
  • A version targetted to people with disabilities
  • A version with more or less graphics, or different colours
  • Customize your day/item templates to output RSS/XML instead of HTML
  • A version suitable for the Avantgo browser on handheld computers
  • An OPML version for browsing in a compatible outliner application
  • A WAP/WML version for cellular phones!

The possibilities are endless.
